2009 NFL Draft

The day is finally here! 2009 NFL Draft! I love the NFL and all the hype that goes with it. However, I’ve never been totally sold on the hype of the draft. I mean, they’re picking college kids who they think have the possibility of strongly (and positively) impacting their team. Yes, you do get guys who come in and tear sh*t up immediately!
Guys like Matt Ryan for the Falcons and Chris Johnson for the Titans.

Then you also get guys who will probably do very well, but the the jury is still deliberating over them a bit.
Guys like JaMarcus Russell and Reggie Bush.

People may disagree with my opinion of Reggie Bush, but we’ll find out if he’s really the truth this season with Deuce no longer being there. He was great in college, but I don’t think he’s quite lived up to the once-in-a-lifetime draft rating he had coming out of USC.
Then you have the “Wow, that sucked!” draft picks.
Guys like Alex Smith and David Carr.
Are either of these guys even playing football anymore?
This all leads into my next point….
Why the f*ck did the Detroit Lions (reportedly) just sign Matthew Stafford to a $78 million deal with $41.7 million GUARANTEED!!!

What?? The $41.7 million is a NFL record for guaranteed money. He beat out the $40 mil guaranteed Albert Haynesworth locked up when he signed with the Skins in the off-season. Both of those numbers are mind boggling, but at least Albert Haynesworth has been playing out of his freakin mind (in the NFL mind you) over the last couple of years, so the Skins at least have an idea of what they’re getting. Plus, Dan Snyder will throw money at anything that’s big and shinny, so it wasn’t a surprise that he signed him.
Stafford, nothing against him, but along with the SEC match-ups, he also played against the Georgia Southern’s and Central Michigan’s of the world last year. Hasn’t thrown a NFL pass yet. However, I wish Stafford luck. I just hope the Lions didn’t just set him up for a major fall from grace. Again, the Lions have proven that…you know what…I’m not even going to comment on the Lions. No need. 0-16 in 2008. That’s it.
It’s crazy, regular people graduate from college and hope they can land that entry-level job making $40K a year. In sports, you leave school early and a team sets a NFL record for your entry-level salary! Straight bananas! One.
